Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and your role as a District leader:
I have a language program called “TalkBham” which teaches learners language through cultural experiences I regularly invite my ESL (English as a Second Language) students to join our Speechcraft and club meetings to further their confidence in speaking. I think we have a huge opportunity in District 77 to recruit more members of our ESL communities, and I am regularly promoting Pathways to my students.
What experience do you have in strategic planning:
I work as a research coordinator for the Department of Radiology at UAB and our clinical trials require strong communication between all parties involved. When we have a new trial I have to serve as liaison for sponsor companies, principal investigators, research staff, the radiopharmacy, lab personnel, and all subjects who are recruited and enrolled in each study. Clinical trials consist of multiple moving parts, and it is my job to ensure all parties are communicating effectively and meeting strict deadlines.
What experience do you have in the area of finance?
I admit I have little experience in the area of Finance. However, I have regularly created budget plans for assignments in my graduate program which, in some ways, could translate into real world experience.
What experience do you have in developing procedures?
Through my work as a research coordinator and my experience using behavior change models as a student, I have created many effective standard operating procedures (SOPs) for projects.
What lessons did you learn from previous leadership positions?
Communication is key! My leadership experiences in Toastmasters and at UAB have provided me the opportunity to work with diverse groups. I feel strongly that communication is the foundation for any type of effective leadership.
Why do you want to serve as a District leader?
I would like to expand my role in District 77 to help clubs strengthen. I believe Pathways promotes a robust, comprehensive approach to public speaking and I want to ensure that each of our clubs are getting the most out of our education system. Toastmasters has provided me a multitude of growth opportunities during my time with the organization and I want to make sure each member has the same experiences those same opportunities.
In your opinion, what are the District mission’s major objectives and how would you work to achieve them?
I am reminded of R.I.S.E (Recruit, Inspire, Speak, Encourage) and I regularly utilize these principles in my Toastmasters’ work. We are ALWAYS working to grow in District 77, and our effective leaders can deliver powerful messages that will inspire and encourage each member. I would stay in contact with each division, area, and club to make sure they know they have the support of the district leaders.
Additional information about yourself:
I have been leading Speechcraft for over two years and I learn from each of those sessions what individuals are looking for from public speaking and what they are not looking for. I think the District has a significant gap in recruiting two populations – our ESL community and our younger generation. I have use my Speechcraft sessions to focus on recruiting those two groups specifically and I think I could also use lessons I have learned to grow the District through each of those groups.
